These are an quivalent to Western Electric 274B, using the nice big glass of the WE300B. 

Important Note: 
This tube is a special audio rectifier, with a higher plate resistance than industry rectifiers, such as GZ34 or 5U4G.  The advantage if this is a soft "on" characteristic while charging the first capacitor. 

This is the principle of how to use this tube:

The 274 is made to run on a small value first capacitor, and the value is limited at 4uF maximum, by the official WE datasheet. This will result in lower hum, and much improved sound quality. The AC rejection will come mainly from the choke, which must have a high value (15...20H) and ideally symmetrically constructed with two coils for best noise rejection. (Like Lundahl 1673/20) The second capacitor is used for fine ripple rejection, and overrating of this capacitors is possible, as much as you want.
